Tuesday News

Hiya

I have been doing some research on iTunes (uh?) and found some downloads you can get for FREE that you need to watch!!! Granted they are not short, so you need hard drive space to get them all. The beauty is you can watch it from home and not have to stay after school to watch them.

Go to iTunes University and look up WGBH. There you will see the American  Presidents series. Great great great (did I say great?) resource to help you. You can put them on your iPod or whatever you use (PC is fine alone). These will help you "concept" time and place (SPRITE) what was happening in US History. Remember these are FREE, GRATIS, Zip in cost, don't wait and start to download them ASAP before they take them off. To buy these cost $24.99 because I bought one before I saw it on iTunes (FDR). I lost money :(

Be mindful of the news, 50,.000 jobs will be lost soon, think about the economy and how it is strengthening the recession.

Be thankful for all you have....

We are going to Nationals in PAAC!

Congrats to our senior team who competed this past Saturday at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and WON! Wooo hoooo they are going to Nationals this April in Washington D. C. yeahhhh... our senior team members were:
Erickson Baniaga, Xuchyll Roman, Isaac Fujikawa, and Jennifer Quach. Great work team!
We had some IB'ers there too! Uzma, Maria and Zach also did great and I can't wait for them to suceed next year! We all had a great time and wish the senior team another victory at Nationals. A team from Hawaii has never won at nationals, so everyone support and help them prepare so our team from JCHS will be the FIRST EVER TO WIN FROM HAWAII !!!!

Lesson
Articles of Confederation, Revist Thomas Paine, Chapter 8-9.... Need Thesis revisions too! Time is running out. At the end of this month the binder check will be chapters 1-12. End of this semester (term 2) will be chapters 1-18 for binder checks...so be prepared. This is a two month warning :)
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah for JCHS PAAC team players!!!

Test Tomorrow!

Hey Guys:

Test tomorrow on the countries: Latin America/Central America (countries only); Canada (provinces and country); Greenland (yeah it is a part of the Americas technically geographically); North America (USA); Caribbean (countries/islands). No capitols, no rivers, no mountain ranges; no Presidents, or no waterfalls! Ok? Wish I had a nickel for all the inquiries I have had on this simple test! JUST BE SURE HOW TO SPELL THEM, no Bank of names!

An IB student made this site (forum), it is not endorsed by me and I have NOTHING to do with it, nor does JCHS. However, I hope it was created for HELPING and DISCUSSING the work for IB students in a productive helpful manner. If you have any problems with it, do not talk to me, talk to Jamie G. http://www.howtosurviveib.bbster.net/

Study tonight and be prepared to have SPRITE ready for Chapter 7 tomorrow.

Hey Jamie.....

Hey Jamie

I need your forum site again. I can't find it with the papers I brought home from work. Email me at jchs.ib@gmail.com and I will post it for all. I am sorry for that and I looked yesterday and could not find it.  I have TOO many papers to grade! :-(

Ok..for the rest of you guys

Test on Maps of Latin America, Canada, Caribbean, and Central America. Know the US too and if you miss it....SHAME ON YOU! Just the countries, capitols will be later on. Study your maps. Also you need to be on Chapter 8 doing SPRITE and vocabs. Go to the ap website for those. I need to get Paul to upload them all, just not enough time in the day I guess to get all done I want and need to be done. I hope by the end of Fall break, your website will be completed.  Be prepared for the test on Monday AND in the groups we made last week, I want you to all do Chapter 8 so we can do it in class on Thursday. I need again to have all the parts of SPRITE sent in again so we quickly discuss them in class.

DVD's. I am not sure where your CAS meeting will be next Tuesday. If they have it in my room (which is most logical because you are already with me) I can show the DVD's afterward. I have just bought the John Adams series which is great explaining the American Revolution. It is a series of seven episodes, but excellent! I also bought a boxed set of the Civil War for you all to watch also. Remember, all of these are to help you enhance your learning! Soon you will begin to piece EARLY US history to LATER US history.

Another thing to pay attention to (sorry so much) in current news. Much of what is happening today in the financial market is very similar to what happens during the early 1900's. Read as much as you can online and the newspaper. This will help you understand what the "conditions" were before the stock market crashed 1929.  Cost of living, banks, panic, confidence in the system, government roles, etc... Laws were put in placed post 1929 to prevent it from happening again, but deregulation removed some of those safeguards. It is all current information, so read on it and we will use it for comparision after awhile (second session).

Also, try to get Chapters 1-5 in place on SPRITE. We will have binder checks the following week and a midterm (Chapters 1-8). So prepare now so you won't panic and be less stressed for your midterm. Best to you all....

AP Exam Fees

Tomorrow

October 1st the deadline for the $31 per exam fee deposit toward any AP Exam. Unless you qualify for a free or reduced lunch, you must pay the deposit on time. Tomorrow you will all get information regarding your deposits!

I have yet to receive ONE emailed Word file on SPRITE we did in class. I don't want to give a poor grade for failing to email me a small file. This is a class work assignment and you TRULY need to email it to me as soon as possible so I can install it in the Smart Board tonight! We will work on this in class tomorrow and complete the class discussion. I only had four students come after class for DVD extra credit. We watched a DVD on the "Roanoke" colony. Be sure to have your study groups use SPRITE in organizing each chapter of learning.

Test next week on maps of Latin America, Central America, Canada, and the Caribbean. Study study study. I am trying to find an online test you can take from the pc to help you pass with a high grade!

Extra Credit and next week

Tomorrow is extra credit movie day after school. I only had four show up on Tuesday and I hope more return tomorrow (Thursday).

Send me an email at: jchs.ib@gmail.com for your group's SPRITE list. We will post it on the Smart board and it will work faster I think and we can complete working on it with greater insight. Send it in Microsoft Word please. If you wish, you can come to my room during lunch for studying. This works great if you cannot meet with anyone after school. Groups can all do the SPRITE (each member do all), then compare notes with each other while you discuss what each person had for the SPRITE. This encourages discussion between study members. Just a fast reminder, one student began to use SPRITE and increased his grade by 20 points! It does work!!!  I have a microwave if you need one, just brown bag lunch one day (your group) and study!

Next week there will be the map quizzes: South America, Central America, Canada and the Caribbean. You will need to name the countries and SPELL them correctly!  Test will be on Tuesday!

We will also begin working on a class project as well as History Day (after Fall break). History day's final thesis will be due after Fall Break. We can also be smart and use your History Project for you Histography as well if you decide to do so. Both require reseach, so that will be discussed as well soon.

I want also everyone to bring a political cartoon/editorial to class on Friday for a grade. Be sure to include the name of the publication, date of publication, a paragraph explaining the premise of the cartoon AND a SPRITE break down (is it politcal, religion, intellectual, etc..)

Remember to send your Word file, study for the map tests, DVD extra credit, and the politcal cartoon.

Chapter Test on Monday

Dear Students:

Please prepare yourself for your big test on Monday. Follow your notes, definitions and most of study the chapters. You can do it! This year's class is so bright and you can acheive your goals. Remember when you study think of SPRITE and apply those themes to what you read. Pay attention to details, rising and declining birth rates, economic changes, religion, etc. Don't just read and not absorb the information. Meet in your study group if you can and discuss the chapters. Own your learning! There will be 16 questions from each chapter. I will divide the chapters into 3 sections and 4 from beginning, 8 from the middle and 4 from the end.

Don't stay up all night studying! You need rest to process what you learned. Watch this web video on sleep and learning: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/3410/01.html

Don't forget Tuesday and Thursday are DVD days for extra credit AND for enhancing your learing. Go also to Merriam Webster. com and get signed up for free for Word of the Day sent to your email for increasing your vocabulary. Jaime found the book on iTunes also, I just found one chapter, he found 4 I think. I have CDs on history for listening and now one on grammar to improve your writing if you have difficulty. Books can also be checked out for studying as well. Latin American books will be here soon and Canadian books should be here within 1 month.

The woods are lovely dark and deep,
and we have miles to go before we sleep..... R. Frost

Good Luck!

Extra Credit, quizes coming up

Salutations

I have been thinking a lot on ideas to ENCOURAGE and help the class. I have pondered and considered the pros and cons of my ideas, so I have come to a decision regarding an incentive for viewing DVDs (which are an intergal part of enhancing your learning experience).

Starting this week, I will choose DVDs that will extend subject matter learning in class. There is obviously not enough time to show in class, so I will offer them after school. Similar to the TBS (Ithink that network)..Dinner and a Date. Instead, my program will be....Extra credit and a Movie Date...basically it works like this:

A viewing of 10 DVDs (I pick'em) will equal 10 points. (1 point per movie) I will offer them twice a week and I will sign off and record your names on the viewing. I also want you to take some notes while watching, not verbatim, but a general understanding that you can keep in your binder for review for next year. Also it is a great way for you to learn to take fast notes (for college).

Most will last from 30 minutes to 1 hour, and exceptional ones may last two hours in which I will show in two segments. I know many have plans after school and I also have plans too after school.

Movies will be on Tuesdays, Wednesday or Thursdays. I will post a DVD schedule on my door and you can choose when to watch them. If no one shows up, I will leave for the day. If possible let me know when you plan to come so I will be sure not to leave early or go make copies, etc..

I hope this encourages everyone to watch these to improve your understanding and increase your knowledge.  Please do not come to watch these and talk/chat and not pay attention because I will not validate your extra credit. Be serious and use this little block of time for increasing your understanding of the subjects.

All my DVDs are educational and are related to US History, Latin American History or Canadian history. I try not to have too boring of DVDs, but not all can be interesting as "Transformers" or like ilk.  :P

Quiz

I feel we need to spend more time before testing. So the last date for the quiz will be on Monday next week. I hate to change the date, but I feel many of you are not ready. Remember, it is cumulative testing. Once you study the chapter enough, you will only need to review your notes briefly each time we take a quiz. It will build up your knowledge (and confidence). Do not just study names and events, try to use analysis and reason in the "why" and "how" events occur in history. Remember all historical events relate to: SPRITE

Social
Political
Religion
Intellectual
Technological
Economics

See you guys tomorrow!

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

Hellooo

Hope you all read your last assigned outside reading assignment. Chapters 4 & 5 should be completed by now. Next week MC tests on Chapters 1-5. Same format as before.

Good News: Latin American books were ordered and hopefully arrive within the month. So your work will double again soon!

Open house: Thursday (tomorrow) there will be an open house. I will be located in Room P-19 if you want extra credit for me to meet your parent(s). Siblings will not count for extra credit, sorry.

Study, make good notes, do your own work, plan your time wisely and be consistent with good learning habits.

I do have DVD's on numerous topics that WILL enhance your learning experience. Remember, all you learn this year will be GONE next year because other students will be using your textbook. Make GOOD notes you can review next year.

Friday

Hey Guys!

Take advantage if you did not do your Vocab correct! Number your definitions or you lose points because I count them! Complete ALL your vocabs too! This is for your benefit, not mine. Truly it is best to make sure you write them by hand, you can type them.

I have found out if you cut and paste the vocabs several things happen....such as I prevent anyone from being able to type them, you do not LEARN anything from doing them, or you get behind thinking you can do it all at the last minute. Be thorough in your definitions, later you will need to study for them next year and others will be using the textbook, so these terms will be all your have to study by for the big exam. Be smart and understand what you wrote in vocabulary.

Next Tuesday I will be out for a doctor visit, so the binder check will be delayed. IF you want to have Paul check it and get it over with, he can do so. However, you will have a multiple choice test of 80 questions over Chapters 1-2 instead. Yikes! Now is the time to study.

The regular binder check will be on Thursday. Chapter 4 should be read by Thursday. Your Chapter 4 vocab completed by the following Monday. I am linking History Day info to your website by this weekend, so be sure to check it.

I added some gadgets to this site, hope you enjoy them.

I am outta here.............

New Changes to Website

Greetings IB'ers

I will be back to school on Monday. I hope you guys enjoyed your long weekend! I have updated some pages on your website. I have added links to Podcasts. You don't have to have an iPod or MP3 player to use these, but you need a PC/Mac to listen to them. If you have an iPod etc. you can save/import them into iTunes.

You should have your history research skills work completed by Tuesday. This is a VERY important part of IB-HOA. This is required by the IB Organization! For now we will use copied sheets and you can keep them, but I will give a grade on your notebook grade with this worksheet. We have ordered books for a class room set, but it will take awhile to order/arrive. You are using my copy for our class work. Don't copy from anyone too, big mistake to do this and will only give you pain later!

The Podcast site has LOTS of good audio feeds on various historic time/events/people. Be sure to listen to them to enhance your learning experience. You can save them to your computer for future reference.

Hope you guys are doing well...............see you soon!

IB for this and next week

Dear IBer's/Ap'ers

AP on "A" day: Presidents start Monday! I choose four out of list, so you have 60% chance you will go Monday. You must recite all the presidents in order (first/last name) within 5 minutes in front of the class.

IB'ers:

Thursday, you will begin working on what is History Research skills? Do the work sheets printed/copied for you. Keep them for yourself for now. Eventually we will have books for all to use in a class set. Part of your Internal Assessment is a historiography research project of your choice. So, this is the first step to understanding "What is history?"

I will be back next Monday to school. Doctor told me to stay in bed, actually she rather "ordered" me (yikes). I brought home your papers and I will have them prepared by next week for a session on writing. Until then, do vocabulary and notes on Chapter 3 for next week. We will start working on our outside readings soon too! Be prepared for a streneous work load soon! Maps should be completed by now and in YOUR BINDER!

Dividers should be as follows:

Notes
Vocabulary
Handouts
Maps
Historiography
Quizes
Outside Readings
Essays
Study Guides

Try to buy some of these now if you can because there are lots of sales where these can be bought/made cheap.

Email me if you have questions at our IB gmail.

Monday

Hello Class!

I will see you all on Monday this week, It is a short week, so I am going to post some new vocabs for you. My typing stinks right now, I have to wear the finger thing for 2-3 weeks until it heals. These terms are NOT in your textbook, will be in your Latin America book just ordered, however I thought to get a head start.

Be ready to discuss Chapter 2, we will be on it for just one day! Then move onto Chapter 3,

I will try to type more later when I get used to this finger guard! Ha ha!

Something you need and it is FREE!

Hi guys

WOoooo HOooooooo! I found a book I wanted you all to read. I know, another book..sigh. However, this one is FREE! Remember, your class is over the "AMERICAS" not just US History, so this will help you. Did I say it was free? Hmmm.... Maps due next Wednesday-Mountains, plateaus, major rivers, capitol cities, Oceans, etc.... ...Ok ok..here is the site ------>
http://books.google.com/books?id=_AUOAAAAIAAJ&pg=PR3&lpg=PR3&dq=victrices+aquilas+alium+laturus+in+orbem&source=web&ots=2agTYkUClP&sig=4RFpuawMXSSdX34Pb5gGwN7-xD0&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result

I believe you can download it to your desktop/hard drive and read it there, or online. DO NOT PRINT IT OUT! It is way too large. This book will be discussed in class next week. Focus on Cortes(z), the March to Mexico, Residence in Mexico and later we will discuss expulsion. There is a certain aspect I want you to think about, what is the "authors" viewpoint of those historical figures? Can you find it? Be prepared to discuss the historiography of this book.

Good Day!

Hellooooo IBer's :)

Ok ok...I goofed on the web URL, thankfully some told me. I just had a brain slip (am old ya know) and combined the URL+@ for e-mail. Yikes, I am embarrased. Please accept my apologies!!!!

Also, I left my phone on my desk all weekend, so I could not return any calls. Sorry if I missed your call. I felt like I cut my arm off or something not having a phone all weekend. Technology can be missed too much sometimes.

Ok, homework, not so bad. I want you to read CHapter 1, thats all for now. The maps I will go over tomorrow, if you want a heads up.......Name all the capitols on all the maps, main rivers, mountain ranges, plateaus, regions, etc. Be neat in your map work, this map has to last 2 years and you need to know this in case the DBQ has a map OR refers in writing to the region.

Bring your books on Tuesday. I was a bit sick still this weekend and basically slept half of it (from the flu). I will be posting calendars in the class and the website so everyone will know the schedule for A & B days.

See you all Tuesday :-)

Welcome to History of the Americas!

Welcome to all! I hope this year will be challenging, exciting, and successful for you. Lots of things to go over each week. You have a homework assignment already. Read and make notes on Chapters 1 and 2 in The American Pagaent textbook. Definitions will be posted on the website by tomorrow night (Thursday). Be prepared to discuss in great length the chapters. You will do an in-class assignment without using your book, so you need to be VERY familiar with the material.

If you have any questions, don't forget to send me an e-mail at jchs.ib@gmail.com.

I am looking forward to learning about you all as well as discussions on history.

Greetings IB Students

I have heard via mainland communication that some books have been ordered in stores because they sold out! Wow! I am amazed and pleased the book will be read! If you can't afford a book, you can borrow, buy it used (online), or wait until I tell you we need to be prepared. The Howard Zinn book is a definite at the beginning of the year though! You will definitely need it throughout the year and next year!!

As for AP book guides. They would help for review, but are not 100% necessary. However, I will be making a contact board in my class for "former students" and "current students" to connect and sell their old AP books. I will not be "part" of the transaction, but I will help when I can so you can buy a used book.

I am still on the mainland until this Friday and then I will be flying back to Hawai'i. I will be in Atlanta for the next four days working on IB curriculum and other IB teachers for HOA.

I am soooo excited to have you guys participate in such an outstanding historical class!

See you all soon!

Welcome to the IB History of the Americas Blog

Greetings Everyone

This summer I have posted on our website some recommended readings for this summer. I placed them in "order"of discussing and time frame. These are suggested because there are a lot of topics, themes, viewpoints, and knowledge that must be discussed as well as, LEARNED in the next two years!

I commend you on accepting this prestigious program and encourage you to work ahead, think internationally, learn analytically, and be cognizant of history.

E-mail me at: jchs.ib@gmail.com I will be out for most of the summer in IB work trainings, History Day Nationals and visiting my loved ones on the mainland. I will check the e-mail periodically as best I can.

Mahalo Pono, shukran keeter, grazie mille, e muchas gracias!
